Today, Silicon Valley Lions helped pack food baskets full of canned goods, staples and fresh produce to be distributed along with frozen chickens to hundreds of needy San José families.

At tonight’s regular club meeting, the Hon. Margaret Abe-Koga, Mayor of Mountain View, spoke about the State of the City 2009. She discussed the city’s financial condition, significant accomplishments of the past year, and future plans. The Mayor was welcomed into the club as an Honorary Lion and pledged her support for club service projects.

On November 21st, Lions from the Silicon Valley Lions Club and San José Amigos Lions Club screened vision and blood sugar for clients and families at the Day Worker Center of Mountain View. The purpose of these neighborhood screenings is to flag risk factors for blindness, as a measure of prevention.

Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable blindness, and our screening identified five possible cases of diabetes. One of these was a gentleman whose blood sugar was over 600 (125 is considered borderline diabetic).

With a blood sugar reading that high, he could have blacked out at any moment. He had been losing weight rapidly over the last four months, meaning his blood sugar was over 400 for at least four months, and his body was literally consuming its own muscle mass.

One of our Lions took the man to Valley Medical Center and waited with him through the better part of the next eight hours, as he was evaluated, diagnosed with Type II diabetes and received medication to begin treatment.

Thanks to all who volunteered, and a very special thanks to Lion John for his willingness to go the extra mile and transport our patient to the hospital and get him squared away.

Silicon Valley Lions will perform a free diabetes, vision and hearing screening clinic at the Mountain View Day Worker Center on Saturday, November 21st from 9 to noon. The Day Worker Center is located inside Trinity United Methodist Church at 748 Mercy Street (between Castro and Church), in Mountain View. The public is welcome.

During the last 30 days, the Silicon Valley Lions Club has referred 8 local residents for no-cost eye exams and glasses. These include a student in the MVLA High School district, and several clients of the Day Worker Center on Mercy Street.

If you are interested in supporting this kind of community service and local charity, please join us at a meeting to learn more about our service club. Our next meeting takes place tomorrow evening, Wednesday, October 7, at 7pm in the board room of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce, 580 Castro Street (corner of Church).

Approximately 110 people are expected to join us for our celebration on Saturday evening. This includes representatives from over 20 Lions Clubs, the local Rotary Club and Quota Club, and residents of Mountain View. Also joining us are Past International Director Scott A. Storms and his wife, Lion Dale, and Lions Hugh and Barbara Donagher, all members of the Windsor Locks Lions Club, in Windsor Locks, Connecticut (District 23-B).

Club members have been hard at work organizing this once-in-a-lifetime event and we’re looking forward to a great party!

The City of Mountain View has declared September 7, 2009 – October 2, 2009 to be “Eyeglass Recycling Days” in Mountain View.

The Silicon Valley Lions Club asks all city residents to dig out those old eyeglasses they no longer need, put them in ZIp-Loc-style bags and place them on top of their recycling bins on collection days this month. Foothill Disposal Co., Inc. will collect those eyeglasses and forward them to us for recycling and reuse around the world.
